Job Title: Laboratory Assistant

Location: Dunstable, Beds, LU5

Salary: £15,825 - £17,300 per annum (£8,307 - £9,081 pro rata)

Part-time: 25 hours per week, term-time only

Job Role:

The role will include ensuring the health and safety of staff and students within the laboratory environment.

The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring the safety of staff and students within the laboratory environment and the safety of all equipment.

The role will also include ensuring chemicals and hazardous materials are stored safely and service, maintain and keep records of the range of departmental equipment,

As a member of the science team you will be supporting the curriculum in all science subjects by assisting teaching staff and students with practical laboratory based tasks.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist students to carry out experiments and complete necessary paperwork to support the assessment process
  • Assist the LAM and teaching staff to prepare risk assessments for science activities and laboratories
  • Prepare equipment and provide for class (this will include demonstrations with students during practical sessions
  • Service, maintain and keep records of the range of departmental equipment, which includes Hazardous materials which require a COSH register including data sheets for chemicals
  • Ensure the safe storage of chemicals and substances and biohazards
  • Operate the glass washer machine
  • Ensure the safe disposal of chemicals and hazardous materials
  • Provide a clean and safe working environment in the science laboratories and other departmental resource areas when required.
  • Provide support for resources within the Department, prepare orders for materials and equipment as and when required and keep an inventory of stock.

Person Specification:

Qualifications;

  • Science background -qualification at level 3 in a science subject
  • Good IT skills including spreadsheets
  • Willingness to train in all areas of COSH as appropriate
  • First aid training will be provided
  • Ability to carry out research on the internet
  • Ability to work from manuals and keep records
  • Good team working skills
  • Good written and oral skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently
  • Driving license- Ability to drive the college minibus is desirable but not essential
