Children’s Residential Service, now called Continuing Care provides a vital resource for children and young people who are unable to live at home.
Residential care for children and young people is a complex and challenging area to work in, and requires a competent, committed staff team to ensure consistency of care which aims to meet the individual needs of children and young people who have experienced trauma in their lives.
The children and young people who access the service will have varying degrees of social, emotional or behavioural needs and who will require, at times intensive support packages to be in place. The aim of this service is to provide a safe and nurturing environment for this vulnerable group by valuing the individuality of children and young people and supporting them in reaching their potential.
Continuing care currently has three properties. The main residential house is situated in Lerwick. This five bedroom property is a residential care home providing long term care for up to three young people. Our second property is also in Lerwick. The third property is in a rural setting and provides care for up to three children and young people on a short term basis. Staff will be allocated to a property and will be expected to remain with that team as long as is assessed as necessary, to ensure positive relationships are made with the children and young people. The service responds to assessed needs for either short term task focused work, day time activities or for longer term residential care. Residential staff seek to maintain a happy and homely ethos in all properties.
The educational and health needs of young people are given high priority whilst in residential care. The team work collaboratively with other professionals and agencies to secure the best outcomes for children and young people in their care.
A developing participation agenda ensures young people’s voices are heard and enables them to maintain control over their lives.
Staff will be on a shift pattern which includes sleep ins, weekend and public holiday working, as well as covering shifts over the Christmas and New Year period.

- Salary shown in the advert is inclusive of Distant Islands Allowance of £1,998 per annum (pro rata)
- This post is career graded - your salary and career progression will depend on your experience and qualifications
- Temporary Full Time post for 37 hours per week, 52.18 weeks per year - Temporary contract for a period of approximately 12 months
- Preferred candidates will be required to join the Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme or undergo a PVG Scheme update prior to a formal offer of employment being made
- The successful candidate will have to complete registration with the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) within 6 months of the agreed start date
