What is the role?

We have a brand new, exciting opportunity for an experienced, qualified Sports and Exercise Medicine Doctor to join our leading Sports Medicine & Science team as the Lead Academy Doctor. This role will provide medical services to players from Southampton Football Club of all ages as well as provide administrative and management services for the academy from U23 down.

This is a fantastic opportunity to lead a multidisciplinary team within the department and shape the future of our Academy medical services. There will also be opportunity to contribute to the strategy of the Sports Medicine and Science department where new and innovative ideas are always encouraged. It will be a rewarding ole, full of variety and with prospects for personal and career development.

The role will include areas of action planning and contribution to the departmental CPD (continuous personal development) programme. You will have oversight of the screening processes including cardiac and anti-doping procedures with UKAD attend the training ground.

It is a full time role which will follow a football schedule with the need to attend team briefings, provide some Matchday cover and have occasional contact with players out of hours. There will be opportunity for teaching, research, conference attendance and presentation. We will support extended training to include for example the AECC Ultrasound course in Bournemouth and we have strong programme of health focused community work through the Saints Foundation and the local Public Health department.

Our Academy is growing outside of Southampton and there will be opportunity for the successful applicant to be part of this and make a name for themselves in this exciting and challenging environment. 

In addition we will support and encourage links with our local private hospitals and clinics to ensure exposure to other sports and disciplines and development of strong links with our specialists.

What are we looking for?

We are looking for applicants with proven track records of a high level of clinical, interpersonal and management skills with experience of working successfully in multidisciplinary teams. The successful candidate will be forward thinking with a strategic mind-set and excited to take on a new challenge. Excellent organisation and prioritisation skills will be essential for scheduling and planning the Academy medical workforce and maintaining accurate medical records.

Experience Essential:
• Success in working in multidisciplinary teams.

Experience Desirable:
• Leading and developing multidisciplinary teams in a sporting environment.
• Track record in managing people.

Qualifications (incl. Certifications) Essential:
• Medical degree.
• Licence to practice
• Diploma sports and exercise medicine.
• Member faculty of sports and exercise medicine.
• Safeguarding level 1/2

Qualifications (incl. Certifications) Desirable:
• Consultant in sports and exercise medicine.
• Fellow of faculty sports and exercise medicine.
• Ultrasound qualification.
• Area or equivalent pitch side emergency care qualification.
• Safeguarding level 3

Skills Essential:
• High level clinical skills.
• High level interpersonal skills.
• High level management skills.
• Well organised.
• Patient centred approach.
• Diligent and pride in work.

Skills Desirable:
• Ultrasound skills.
