Freight Security Assistant (Relief)

Salary: up to £35,839 pa including allowances

Salary Breakdown:

  • Salary - pay band 6, £20,048 to £23,166 pa

  • Allowances - contractual overtime and shift allowance takes the gross basic salary to £31,016 to £35,839 pa

Hours: An average of 43.31 hours per week (including weekends and bank holidays) worked over a shift pattern that covers 24 hours a day, 7 days a week

Reports to: Traffic Supervisor

What is the job?

Based at Portsmouth International Port (PIP), this post provides both short and long term flexible cover for the Freight Security Assistant posts.

The main duties are:

  • To provide flexible cover as required for the Freight Security Assistant posts.

  • To provide security services as required by PIP including but not limited to searching, passes, data processing, monitoring, parking and marshalling.

  • To assist the Traffic Supervisor as directed in their routine tasks.

  • Have a working knowledge of all PIP emergency plans and procedures.

  • Required to be proficient in all skills and competencies needed to carry out the duties of the post.

  • Required to be proficient to obtain the training specification for the post of Traffic Supervisor.

  • Provide proactive liaison with all Port Users eg. shipping companies, statutory authorities, contractors, etc. as required to enable the smooth operation of the Freight Gate complex.

  • Required to comply with all PIP and Portsmouth City Council policies and procedures, also all quality standards.

  • Undertake any other tasks that may reasonably be allocated by PIP.

  • This is a guide to the work you will initially be required to undertake. It may be changed from time to time to meet changing circumstances.

Who are we looking for?

  • You need a good understanding of current port security legislation.

  • You need a good standard of basic education and to be computer literate.

  • You must be customer focused and be able to demonstrate your ability in communicating with people at all levels within the organisation as well as with external customers and the general public.

  • You need a good working knowledge of the regulations for the transportation and storage of dangerous goods and hazardous cargoes.

  • You should have an understanding of both freight control and the marshalling of passengers and traffic.

  • You should have experience in the searching of vehicles, passengers and baggage.

  • A good knowledge of the local area would be advantageous.
