Location: Marischal College
Duration: Permanent and Fixed Term (Maternity Cover)
Hours: 37 hours per week but would consider part time

Please note that the rate of pay for a Trainee would be £18,586 - £19,163

The Commercial Team is a multi-disciplinary team responsible for regulating 2000+ food businesses, including 20+ Approved Establishments. We are also responsible for occupational health and safety at 4,000 establishments across the city. We have Port Health responsibilities at both the air and seaports A large number of ship sanitation visits and export certificates are issued annually. The team is also responsible for animal health and welfare as well as licensing standards.

In order to ensure a highly skilled and competent task force, the team invest heavily in officer training. The training plan for 2016/17 includes a proposal for all staff to undertake a week long training course relating to food crime. It is anticipated that new recruits would undertake Advanced HACCP training at the earliest opportunity.

A recent recruit to the team stated ‘Since joining the Commercial Team at Aberdeen City Council in February, I have been provided with a number of training opportunities, including: Advanced HACCP; Investigation Skills; and the Certificate of Competence in Environmental Noise Measurement, which have increased my confidence, competence and professional experience significantly. The work in the service is varied, allowing you to apply your knowledge and enhance your skills daily. The team also work very well in supporting each other, alongside encouragement and guidance from the management team’.

Job Purpose
To contribute to the fulfilment of the Council’s statutory responsibility for delivering Environmental Health services.


Authorised Officer
The post holder needs to hold as a minimum:
Full UK driving licence.
Appropriate qualifications to meet Food Law Code of Practice (Scotland) requirements for the inspection of high risk establishments e.g. the Higher Certificate in Food Premises Inspection and Higher Certificate in Food Standards inspection.

Trainee Authorised Officer
The post holder needs to hold as a minimum:
Full UK driving licence.
An appropriate qualification, accepted by the Royal Environmental Health Institute of Scotland (REHIS) as meeting the prerequisite requirements for the Higher Certificates in Food Premises Inspection and Food Standards. E.g. Higher National Diploma in Food Technology or equivalent.


The post holder is expected to demonstrate:
Proven ability to write reports and keep accurate records.
Proven ability to work to deadlines.
Proven ability to plan and organise work effectively.
