Principal: Content Policy
London
GBPCompetitive Plus Pension & Flexible Benefits
Ofcom is the independent regulator and competition authority for the UK communications sectors and we are globally respected for the work we do. Our aim is to make communications work for everyone.
Ofcom is going through a period of positive change which has provided a unique opportunity to re-prioritise and set a new strategic direction - so an exciting time to join us.
We have Principal roles available in Ofcom's Content Policy team, part of the Content Group. This team is responsible for developing policy across a range of areas, including public service broadcasting (primarily through licensing and PSB Reviews), independent production, Nations and Regions broadcasting and new regulatory responsibilities given to Ofcom as a result of the BBC Charter Review.
As one of the Principals in a new team which is building capacity, you will be responsible for delivering major projects and programmes. You will work across a range of issues and the policies your teams develop will have a real, long term impact in what is an essential and dynamic sector for consumers and companies.
You will provide clear and effective management of multi-disciplinary teams made up of expert lawyers, competition economists and financial specialists. You will work collaboratively with other teams in Ofcom to ensure that policies are effectively implemented in practice and to provide expert advice on content policy issues that cut across traditional boundaries to support our corporate vision of making communications work for everyone.
Essential Skills/Experience
- Management skills: You should be able to build, develop, inspire and motivate teams made up of multi-disciplinary specialists, capable of flexibly responding to Ofcom's priorities and delivering high quality output
- Communication skills: You should be confident and articulate, able to communicate written arguments effectively to a range of different audiences and have strong verbal and listening skills to ensure an active role in group discussion
- Analytical skills: You should have demonstrable experience of thinking creatively about complex problems and defining effective solutions. You should be able to constructively challenge the logic and analysis which underpins your teams' recommendations
- Relationship building: You will be able to build and maintain effective working relationships with a broad range of people, notably industry stakeholders and colleagues across Ofcom
- Sector knowledge: You will have knowledge and understanding of content production and distribution and commercial developments within the broadcasting and online media sectors
Desirable Skills/Experience
- Industry experience: Across the team as a whole we are looking for a balance of individuals with knowledge or experience of sectors such as broadcasting and online media. Knowledge of BBC decision-making and/or strategy would also be desirable as would an understanding of competition analysis
- Regulatory experience: Although it is useful if you are familiar with the communications industry and regulation, or have been involved in public policy already, it is not essential that you have done this before. However, we will be looking for you to show that you understand public policy issues and processes
- Broad understanding of concepts such as public value and the challenges of convergence in the media landscape
We are looking for successful candidates to join the team in both our London and Edinburgh offices.
