We are now recruiting for a Principal Mechanical Engineer on behalf of a Cambridge based client. In this role, the successful candidate will provide a significant contribution to major fast track medical technology development projects. The position will require you to apply your mechanical design engineering abilities to the development of world-leading medical products for clients around the globe. You will work as part of a multi-disciplinary team to develop novel solutions to difficult technical problems. As a Principal Mechanical Engineer, you will be expected to take a leading hands-on role in the design and development of innovative and complex mechanical and electro-mechanical systems. You will have the opportunity to work with some of the top design, engineering and technology talent in the country. Your enthusiasm and technical knowledge will be inspiring for the team working with you. You will provide technical leadership of the mechanical design effort to deliver robust solutions within agreed timelines. Your skills will be used in different types of projects across the divisional focus areas and you will contribute to all stages of the development from specifying products and initial concept generation through to manufacturing industrialisation. You will be able to identify technical risks within a development and identify effective mitigations. You will combine your commercial experience with your strong technical background and communication skills to liaise successfully with clients and the engineering team. You are able to present clearly and confidently whilst conveying complex technical topics to various audiences. You will be able to understand the technical needs of the client and prepare proposals which capture these requirements. You may be expected to occasionally travel internationally to visit clients and manufacturers. Working in a medical technology environment, you will be able to document your designs appropriately and be able to follow company development processes.

Main Responsibilities:

* Leading design engineers to realise your technical solutions
* Driving your design with solid engineering principles and calculations
* Take lead roles in creative workshops, generating and visualising your own ideas and those of the team around you
* Generation of innovative concepts and layouts of systems in 3D CAD
* Detailed design of components and products in CAD
* Tolerance analysis of system designs
* Production of detailed drawings and manufacturing specifications
* Transfer of designs to manufacture through liaison with external suppliers
* Identification of methods to test and verify your designs, analyse the results, present findings and make design recommendations based on these
* Writing technical reports and producing high quality design documentation

Qualifications, Experience and Skills:

* An excellent degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline
* Talented, creative mechanical engineer, with the ability to solve complex mechanical system problems and design ingenious mechanisms.
* High level of practical experience with proven technical skills, and significant experience working in an engineering design environment.
* Creative and methodical approach to problem solving, whilst ensuring adherence to design processes.
* Knowledge of manufacture and assembly processes from one off designs to high volume manufacture is required, with experience in plastic injection moulding being particularly desirable
* Significant experience in 3D CAD, preferably ProEngineer and SolidWorks
