Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management

Flooding is identified as a corporate risk and has the potential to cause significant damage to homes and infrastructure as well as having a detrimental impact on people’s wellbeing. The Borough also experiences coastal erosion which will in the future threaten housing. As a Borough Sefton Council have acknowledged this risk and sought to manage it through understanding of the risk, prevention, protection and preparedness. This function is delivered by the FCERM team in conjunction with internal and external partners.

The team also manage the North West Regional Coastal Monitoring Programme on behalf of maritime authorities in North West England. The programme collects a wide variety of data types to improve the understanding of the coastal environment. The team’s work is split between managing contracts and managing data. There may be occasional site survey work and attending meetings across the northwest.

We are looking for an individual to support the delivery of the service who is able to assist in the design of both coastal and inland drainage solutions. We would like the applicant to have experience in both hard and soft design solutions. The work of the service is wide ranging, and involves working to deadlines, applying legislative requirements and working flexibly and effectively with our various customers.

Job requirements:

  1. Contribute to the delivery of a service plan for the team and T&HI, which will be managed through a performance framework


  • Assisting in the implementation of powers and duties associated with FCERM


  • Assisting in the management of the Council’s assets that provide a flood and coastal erosion risk management function to the Council and residents of Sefton


  • The provision of technical reports, support and advice


  • Assist in the preparation of committee reports


  • Assisting in the management of revenue and capital budgets

The ability to work flexibly with a range of customers and to meet deadlines is essential.
