Economy, Planning and Employability Services is a key service combining Economic Development, Planning and Protective Services which has developed an ambitious economic growth and regeneration strategy for Fife.
The Protective Services element forms a wide range of statutory and advisory services designed to protect public health and consumer safety through environmental health, trading standards and building standards functions.
Protective Services has a vacancy in its Environmental Health (Food & Workplace Safety) Team for an Environmental Health Officer to assist and support the Service Manager & Lead Officers in the discharge of the relevant Environmental Health functions.
The officer will be working within the Environmental Health (Food & Workplace Safety) Team and will be required to work on their own and with other team members in carrying out the duties of the team. They will also work with other Council services and partner organisations.
The Team’s role includes:
• Inspections and interventions of businesses in relation to Food Safety, Food Standards and Health and Safety legislation.
• In conjunction with our partners in NHS the investigation of food & waterborne illnesses.
• Licensing – Inspection of premises for various licences in terms of the Civic Government (Scotland) Act 1982 and The Licensing (Scotland) Act 2005.
• Advice – on various food, health and safety and licencing matters
• Port Health – visits to and inspection of ships for ship sanitation certificates
Fife Council pays the Scottish Local Government Living Wage Rate to employees earning less than £8.33 per hour. If the hourly rate of pay for the post is less than the Scottish Local Government Living Wage Rate a supplement will be paid.
Degree in Environmental Health and Royal Environmental Health Institute of Scotland’s Diploma in Environmental Health (or suitable equivalent).

• To assist and support the Service Manager/Lead Officers in carrying out the duties of the team.
• To undertake visits/inspections both proactively and reactively to ensure the necessary enforcement of Environmental Health legislation.
• To action and resolve complaints and requests for service in accordance with Service policies and procedures. To provide advice, information and support to a wide range of organisations including businesses and members of the public on all aspects of Environmental Health.
• To work/liaise with partner agencies and other services as required.
• To carry out a range of administrative duties including the preparation of statistics and the keeping of records.
• To serve statutory notices within the relevant legislation associated with the team’s functions and duties.
• To attend meetings with internal/external partners
• To initiate proceedings and prepare reports to the Procurator Fiscal.
• To undertake such other duties as may from time to time be required.
• To ensure awareness and compliance with the Health & Safety at Work Act.
• To work out with normal office hours according to the exigencies of the team.
• To undertake the full range of enforcement and advisory responsibilities within a specified functional team.
• To remain up to date with all relevant legislation, guidance, codes of practice, etc., relating to the team responsibilities.
• To participate in the Service out of hours Standby Scheme.
You will have a Degree in Environmental Health and the Royal Environmental Health Institute of Scotland’s Diploma in Environmental Health (or suitable equivalent). You should also have experience in dealing with a wide range of Environmental Health issues
