Communications & Marketing Manager

The Police & Crime Commissioner (PCC) office is a dynamic environment with a fast paced comms department dealing with proactive and reactive media. Matthew Ellis is the elected official in Staffordshire and Stoke on Trent charged with securing efficient and effective policing on behalf of the electorate.. 

About the role:

Working closely with the PCC (and deputy) and reporting directly to the Chief of Staff, the successful applicant will play an integral role in disseminating the work of the office to the electorate and partner organisations.

There has never been a more opportune moment to promote the good work of the office has the Commissioner continues with a second term mandate from the electorate.

Working to multiple deadlines, day to day duties include: liaising with and pitching stories to local, regional, national media and trade journalists; drafting reactive and proactive media comment; writing press releases; finding news and feature stories.

The OPCC continues to expand its digital offering; there will be a requirement to oversee internal communications, social media, podcast and video editing, as well as compiling media statistics and analysis.

Person Specification:

The successful applicant for this role will be able to demonstrate an impressive understanding of the news agenda and criminal justice issues. Previous experience of working in a press office or as a journalist is preferred, but for an outstanding candidate not essential.

They will also be able to demonstrate:

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to communicate for a wide variety of audiences
  • Developing strategic communications programmes
  • Strong, existing relationships with media contacts or ability to build and maintain these relationships
  •  Proficient digital skills with a strong social media interest
  • A sound news judgement, and understanding of what makes a good news story
  • Knowledge of, or ability to develop knowledge of, important criminal justice issues
  • A hard-working attitude, and the ability to work under pressure with a cool demeanour
  • Strong organisational and planning skills, and demonstrable experience of prioritising work.
  • Flexibility to be on-call for media relations outside of normal working hours

Salary Range from £42,492 – £48,486 depending on experience
