Resident Adult - St Andrew's

Closing Date: 5pm Friday 7 October 2016

About us

1625 Independent People prevents youth homelessness in the South West and has been helping 16-25 year olds reboot their lives through housing and support for over 30 years.
Our service works because we keep young people's needs at the centre of all delivery.

With over 90 staff in four locations, we provide housing support and advice to around 1800 young people per year. We're one of the brightest youth organisations in the South West, leaders in our field, no other organisation in the area has the same wealth of experience.

About the job

(Please read the full job description for more detail)

Terms, conditions and benefits:

  • Pay: £2,318 per year
  • Rent and utilities charges are covered by 1625ip under  this contract

The job is based at the accommodation in the St Andrew's area of Bristol.

You'll be working in the Housing team and line managed by the Supported Housing Officer.

Five young people live in the house each with their own lockable bedroom but with communal kitchen, bathroom and living room. The Resident Adult has a large unfurnished double room with en-suite at the top of the house.

The young people all have a dedicated professional Supported Housing Officer who supports them towards becoming independent. But they can't be there all the time. We have found that some young people do really well and settle in much quicker if there is a bit of extra support on hand. Many have never lived alone.

The resident adult role provides this additional support. You will provide up to twelve hours low level support every week, mostly in the evenings and weekends.

You will help keep the house running smoothly by helping young people settle in, doing safety checks and making sure people are sticking to the house rules (cleaning/ visitors etc), all the while reporting back to the Supported Housing Officer.

Even though you work in the community you're also part of the 1625ip Housing Team and you'll attend one supervision style meeting with the Supported Housing Officer a month, and one house meeting with all the residents and the Supported Housing Officer at least once every two months.

This is a really rewarding role, helping young people at a crucial time in their support. Maintaining a positive dynamic in a shared house can be challenging  - the young people don't necessarily know each other at first - but when it works you are essentially creating a home where young people can feel safe and grow.

The team are very supportive of each other and through reflective practice we are always learning from our own and each other's experiences.

Our work is rooted in providing support in a Psychologically Informed Environment framework known as PIE.

A typical day might include:

  • Delivering an independent living skills workshop such as a house cooking session
  • Attending a house meeting
  • Introducing a young person to their new home

We will provide a full induction into the role and the service, with ongoing training.

 About you

You have empathy and understanding of the needs of homeless young people, young people leaving care, and the barriers they face. You like being around and working with young people.

You love being the 'go to' person, dealing with situations, helping people work things out for themselves but being supportive and listening.

You are good at maintaining boundaries and knowing when to escalate things.

Previous resident adults have worked full time, some have been students, active retirees and people with minimal travel commitments who tend to be around at evenings and weekends.
