English Graduate Learning Mentor/Teaching Assistant - Birmingham Secondary School - Starts ASAP
My client school, conveniently located in Birmingham, are currently recruiting a Graduate Teaching Assistant to work within the school's English department. This is a full time position starting (ASAP) at the turn of the new academic year in September. This is a fantastic opportunity to gain valuable experience in an English faculty prior to studying a PGCE, ITT as an English teacher.
***English Graduate - Min 2:1 Hons
***Graduate Learning Mentor/Teaching Assistant
***Birmingham Secondary School
***Full time / term time position
***GBP50-65 per day
Person Specification
To support learning in English, particularly at GCSE level, the school are keen to appoint a Graduate Learning Mentor with a degree in English. The role of a Graduate Learning Mentor is to support both whole classes and smaller groups (possibly 'Gifted and Talented' or those of lower ability) of pupils studying English and English Literature. Classes can be spread across the Key Stages and will include some work at AS and A2 level. Candidates are required to have a first class or upper second class degree in English or English Literature from a respected university.
Although not essential there will be preference given to those candidates who have previous or current experience supporting and working with young people. This experience could be in a school setting, as a tutor or outside organisation. Candidates need to be able to commit to working 5 days a week during term time until the middle of July 2017.
The School
My client Roman Catholic School is a secondary school located in south Birmingham. Well-maintained high standards over the last 48 years have attracted an increasingly high number of non-Catholic pupils. The school is open to pupils aged 11 to 18 years, with the highest two age groups making up the Sixth Form. Despite its being a Catholic school, many of the school's pupils are non-Catholic and include Muslims and Sikhs. The school performs well in the local GCSE tables and is regularly among the highest performing schools in Birmingham.
About the role
The role of a Graduate Learning Mentor/Teaching Assistant is to provide additional support for pupils in English. The school are ideally looking for graduates that want to go on, at some later stage, to become fully qualified English teachers. This role will give candidates the perfect platform and experience to really make the most of that future teacher training.
To be successful in this role you need to be highly organised, knowledgeable in your specialist subject - English - and most importantly flexible and creative in your approach. Having patience and the ability to explain the same principle in different ways will also stand you in good stead
