At Cancer Research UK (CRUK), we are pioneering life-saving research in the relentless fight against all cancers. Our Media Relations team is highly regarded and has won CIPR, PR Week and Communique Awards. We are seeking an experienced Senior Media Relations Officer with the ability to source and place compelling stories supporting our fundraising, campaigning, science and health awareness initiatives in the media across Wales and the South West of England.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Maintaining and developing CRUK's prominence in Welsh and South West media, proactively and reactively.
  • Identifying and developing compelling human interest stories, working closely with cancer patients and survivors.
  • Acting as regional spokesperson on non-scientific stories.
  • Empowering other staff within the organisation, (eg, fundraisers), to undertake appropriate local-level PR.

Communicating our work to the public and encouraging support through all forms of media is vital, as our research receives no government funding and relies on public donations. This means you'll be a confident and passionate communicator, whether you're working with cancer patients, supporters, celebrities, scientists or the National Assembly for Wales. You'll use your existing media and networking contacts, along with an understanding of the evolving regional media landscape, to ensure CRUK maintains its position as the leading authority on cancer. Strong media contacts in Wales and the south west are vital. You'll have visual creativity to tell stories through pictures, be familiar with digital photography and have the ability (or quickly learn), to produce short videos suitable for regional news websites and TV. You will already be using social media as part of your professional tool kit. A Welsh speaker is desirable but not essential

To take on this exciting opportunity and help us bring forward the day when all cancers are cured, you'll have…

  • Significant experience as a senior journalist, PR manager or in an in-house press office, with a proven track record in proactive media relations.
  • A sophisticated understanding of regional and Welsh media and its needs.
  • The ability to seek out news stories to engage support.
  • Knowledge of the National Assembly for Wales and campaigning related to Cancer Research UK.
  • An understanding of the role of social media in enhancing media relations.
  • The confidence to work independently and remotely, and also as part of a geographically-dispersed team.
  • The successful candidate must have a driving licence and be able to travel when necessary.

If you can do all this and more, you'll enjoy a great career as we work hard to beat cancer sooner. Please follow the link to apply online.

Closing date: Wednesday 7th September at 23:55

First round job interviews will be held in Cardiff on Monday 19th September with second stage happening in London on 28th September.

Please note, this position is home based and ideally the successful candidate will live within easy reach of Cardiff.
