Position: Automotive Powertrain Project Control Engineer
Location: Basildon, Essex
Salary: £25,000 to £30,000

The Company:
Our client has a team of engineers working in automotive assembly plants and engineering centres throughout Europe. They are responsible for specifying, configuring and testing the software in vehicle control systems, and ensuring they conform to the necessary standards, in addition to general project management tasks relating to getting a Powertrain Control System into a vehicle meeting all corporate, legal, program, timing, quality and cost objectives.

The Automotive Powertrain Project Control Engineer Role:
They are looking for a bright and enthusiastic candidate to be based in Basildon, Essex, to work with their major blue-chip clients on various automotive powertrain control related projects. Good project management skills, ideally related to engine management control systems, or a knowledge of automotive electronic units (ECUs) would be beneficial.

Excellent English communications skills, both written and verbal are required, as you will be dealing with other internal departments, and suppliers.

An automotive background would be ideal, but candidates with experience in other industries such as aerospace, defence, rail, medical systems, etc. will be considered.

The objective of this role is to project manage a product development team through the development of a new vehicle content on a complex commercial vehicle. This role gives an ideal opportunity to further develop your project management skills working in an exciting cross cultural and cross functional environment.

The key requirements to fill the role are that the candidate has project management skills, preferably in the automotive sector. The candidate should also demonstrate good leadership and communication skills to lead a group (drawn from diverse areas such as Engineering, Design, Purchase, Manufacturing, Finance and Marketing) through complex issues to deliver an optimum solution. The candidate should possess the capability to handle wide ranging assignments from senior management presentations to detailed analysis. significant travel may be required

Tasks:
  • Lead, manage, coordinate and develop communication between departments
  • Lead development, documentation, deployment and continuous improvement of best practices for process, methods and documentation relating to project control and delivery of specific Powertrain Control System
  • Lead collation of program technical information for creation and issue of RFQ and creation and signature Statement of Work (SoW) with PCM supplier
  • Create, issue and maintain detailed project plan
  • Set and ensure requirements freeze dates are met 
  • Create, update and control program specific Bill of Material (BoM)
  • Lead communication of and ensure resolution of all related issues identified during program
  • Lead development, roll-out and improvement of processes and methodologies relating to Project Control & Delivery
  • Manage and coordinate supplier delivery of correct level PCM h/w and s/w to match rig, vehicle and engine program expectations / requirements
  • Coordinate interface with suppliers including issue of Formal program direction
  • Track, control and report program specific expenditure (engineering resource and supplier engineering costs)
  • Represent department at launch reviews
  • Liaise with Homologation team
  • Manage approval of deviations
Qualifications and Skills:
  • Degree to BEng/BSc or higher, with significant engineering, electronics, software and / or IT content
  • Software process, design, development, delivery experience / or experience of working on vehicle launches or automotive engineering projects
  • Must be capable of leading, directing and prioritising
  • Excellent teamwork and leadership skills
  • Fluent in written and spoken English
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills
  • Launch experience of equipment and systems within an Assembly Plant would be preferred but not essential
  • Experience and knowledge of vehicle electronic and electrical systems would be preferred but not essential
  • Ability to travel to European locations when on launch
