About the role
Balfour Beatty Rail have an exciting opportunity for an Assistant Engineer to work with the Engineering Technology Solutions (ETS) Rail Design team based in Liverpool. This office deals mainly with overhead line (OLE) Design so experience in this or the rail sector as a whole would be a huge advantage.

Working as part of our exciting and fast growing ETS Rail team, your job will be to undertake assistant engineering activities under a supervising engineer.

To be successful in this role you will need awareness of construction methods and materials. Have completed and put into practise your HNC qualification or be an Engineering Graduate. You will be committed to a safe working environment, have some experience of producing calculations, drawings and reports in a project delivery environment. Ideally your experience will have been gained in a rail environment.

What you'll be doing

  • To act safely and work to eliminate hazards at source and to provide deliverables that satisfy safety and quality requirements.
  • Produce calculations and drawings under direction.
  • Direct junior staff.
  • Contribute to the production of investigations, reports and specifications.
  • Operate in compliance with relevant technical, professional and group standards
  • Identify project change.
  • Undertake work using formal processes and procedures.
  • Record time and provides time estimates for tasks under direction.
  • Ensure successful audits and that packages are delivered to programme and budget and that they comply with good design practice, relevant technical, professional and group standards

Who we're looking for
Essential:

  • HNC with substantial experience or Engineering Graduate.
  • Awareness of construction methods and materials.
  • Knowledge of Group Standards /HSE Legislation.
  • Basic level of IT.
  • Knowledge of Engineering Drawing Practices.
  • Some experience producing calculations, drawings and reports in the project delivery environment for the particular discipline (rail). Some experience operating to procedures and design office practices.Knowledge of Network Rail Company Standards.

Desirable:

  • Knowledge of National and International Standards
  • Working knowledge of Bentley MicroStation in a 3D environment
  • Appreciation of Building Information Modelling (BIM) and its application to projects
  • Updates job knowledge by tracking and understanding emerging engineering practices;
  • A willingness to learn and ability to innovate. Delivery focused.
  • Strong and effective communicator across peer group within the company and customers.
  • Proactive and able to use initiative
  • Developing ability to work unsupervised
  • Aspiration to be a leader or specialist within an engineering environment
  • Able to take ownership of small projects or elements of larger projects
  • Rail desgn engineering experience
