An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Commercial Manager to join Colas Ltd based in Birmingham.

Responsibilities:

  • All commercial functions within the workstream.
  • Provide support in the development of commercial systems and processes and oversee their implementation and review within the operational business.
  • To liaise and develop long term relationships with Associate Directors, senior managers and others as required in client, supply chain and other partner organisations to maximise all potential business opportunities.
  • To maintain an up to date awareness of activities and standards within Colas’ business sectors as they relate to this appointment.
  • To carry out all duties and responsibilities in a manner that supports the Company Vision and Mission.
  • To demonstrate appropriate experience, training and qualifications for the post.

Main Activities:

  • To manage the entire commercial function of the Alliance with the responsibility for the outputs of the various teams of estimating and commercial management staff.
  • To ensure that commercial practices and policies are implemented and followed within the Alliance and associated business units.  Providing input into the annual review of the corporate commercial processes, policies and guidelines to ensure that they meet the needs of the business whilst meeting corporate governance requirements.
  • To provide commercial and technical advice and support to senior managers and local commercial teams within the Alliance.
  • Promoting and disseminating the core principles associated with the introduction of the new ERP system being implemented across the Colas group.
  • Consolidate the monthly commercial performance of the Alliance and provide reporting to the Contracting Director.  Ensure that monthly commercial reports from the business units are produced on time and that the content of these is both accurate and up to date, reflecting known events.
  • Proactively manage WIP and reserve provisions to minimise exposure and report on these in a monthly basis.
  • Follow corporate guidance and processes on Risk Management and maintain the Alliance Risk Register. 
  • Manage the commercial approach to key areas of risk and opportunity throughout the project life cycles
  • Gather and disseminate the feedback from current and completed projects on risk and opportunity to encourage lessons learnt and improve the approach to risk capture and reporting at a corporate level.
  • In accordance with the Bidding Framework and Alliance procedures, provide support on
  • Provide input into relevant Strategic Opportunities to enhance the bidding outcomes.
  • Ensure that on award, each works package is formally handed over to operational delivery teams and this process is documented and reviewed.
  • To assist the formation of claims for entitlement, ensure that a process is followed for the accurate recording of site activities undertaken and events are maintained and collated for easy reference.  With overall responsibility for change management and the maximisation of entitlement within the Alliance.
  • Support the review of Colas’ joint venture interests to ensure that both corporate governance requirements are being followed and that Colas’ risk exposure is monitored and reported.  Input into the monthly reporting cycle within the JV’s liaising directly with the commercial management staff on these projects.
  • Review of contractual relationships with key suppliers and providers of professional services, ensuring that corporate liabilities are stepped down through robust agreements and appropriate contractual arrangements.

An ideal Commercial Manager will have the following skills and qualifications:

  • Have a strong track record of commercial experience  
  • Significant demonstrable experience of commercial management in an analogous senior management position
  • Extensive understanding of common contracts forms and their application
  • Relevant Academic and Professional Qualifications ,eg MRICS, MSc Construction Law
  • Experience of Dispute Resolution including ADR, Arbitration and litigation
  • Excellent leadership skills
  • Extensive Major Project
  • Experience of rail, urban tramway, BRT or similar activity
