Department

Student and Academic Services (SAS) provides a wide-range of services and support to students and academic staff. Our student services span the complete student lifecycle from enquiry, through enrolment and on-course support, to graduation and beyond. Our academic services include direct support for academic staff in many aspects of their work, and portfolio support spanning the course lifecycle, from planning and approval, through to curriculum management and programme review. Our ambition is that the services we provide should be sector leading, adapted to meet the needs of our University, and sufficiently flexible to respond rapidly to changing requirements.

Technical Services comprises approximately 200 specialist technicians across the University. We provide expert support to undergraduate and postgraduate students and the student experience is at the heart of what we do. The services we provide also underpin a wide variety of academic programmes and we deliver this support via specialist laboratories, workshops, design studios and contemporary arts facilities. Providing integral support for research, consultancy and knowledge exchange activities. We are a forward-looking service, committed to a culture of continuous improvement and service excellence.

Role

We have an exciting opportunity for a Technical Service Manager to join our thriving business. As the Technical Service Manager, you will manage four teams of technical staff, supporting a diverse range of workshops in the Makers service area. You will take responsibility for the planning, management and provision of technical services within this area.

This will require co-ordination and operational management of a number of technical teams, in support of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, commercial, research and third stream activities. You will also provide advice to service users on a range of issues including resourcing, financial, technical and procedural guidance and technical advice, training and instruction to service users, as part of the teaching team. In addition, you will support learning, teaching, research and enterprise activities, as a member of the technical team.

Ideal Candidate

We are looking for an experienced technical professional with excellent experience in running a range of busy customer-facing workshops. An excellent knowledge of Health and Safety will be required, together with previous experience of managing a range of workshops and teams of technical staff.
