Scope exists to make this country a better place for disabled people and their families. We do this by running a range of services, raising awareness of the issues that disabled people face and influencing change across society. We provide support, advice and information for more than a quarter of a million disabled people and their family members every year.

Scope in Plymouth are seeking an enthusiastic Support Worker to join their team.

Values and attitudes are important to us when supporting our customers in our services.

You will join a team that provide everyday practical support to disabled children and adults to make it possible for them to have the same opportunities as everyone else.

The role will include supporting customers across Devon or Cornwall, both at home and in the community to support to achieve good health and personal care and the development of life-skills. Previous experience either working in the social care sector would be useful however it is more important to us that you genuinely believe in supporting individuals to live inclusive, independent lives.

As our Support Worker, you will:

- Provide excellent care and person centred support to our customers

- Talk to people about what we do and give them great examples of our work

- Take responsibility for the quality of your work and be willing to ‘go the extra mile’

- Find new and better ways of doing the things within your own area of responsibility

- Consult with customers, deliver what you say and ensure they are satisfied

- Collaborate and communicates regularly and effectively with colleagues taking a different approach when useful

To become our Support Worker, it is essential that you have the following skills and experience:

- Willing and able to work towards getting any relevant qualifications, attending training and to take responsibility for your own development.

- Familiar with basic IT functions e.g. using Email, or willing to be supported to quickly learn these skills

- Able to establish effective rapport and communication with others, by demonstrating respect for people’s dignity and providing compassionate care.

- Be able to adapt your communication style to the needs of individuals you are working with. Where necessary develop skills to support individuals through the use of sign and or symbols.

- Able to write legibly and clearly so that paperwork and other records are kept appropriately.

- Able to work supportively as a team member and confidentially when working independently, within a range of settings

- Able to understand, apply and work within Scope’s policies and procedures.

- Maintaining confidentiality in compliance with Scope’s standards.

- Able to understand, interpret and deliver effective care and person centred support plans.

- Able to work flexibly to accommodate the needs and choices of those using the service.

Desirable Skills as our Support Worker

- Able to demonstrate an understanding of the social model of disability and the contribution of Services to achieving social change

- Relevant qualification if required e.g. NVQ level 2 or QCF Diploma level 2 in Health and Social Care

- Experience of supporting disabled individuals in a paid or voluntary capacity
