We are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic person to cover the maternity leave of our Policy and Campaigns Officer in Wales for an initial 6 month period, with the possibility of an extension. The Policy and Campaigns Officer (Wales) is responsible for influencing public policy in the interests of deafblind people and those with complex needs of all ages, in Wales.

About Sense

Sense is a national charity that supports and campaigns for children and adults who are deafblind. We provide specialist information, advice and services to deafblind people, their families, carers and the professionals who work with them. In addition, we support people who have sensory impairments with additional disabilities.

About the role

The role of Policy and Campaigns Officer (Wales) will involve:

  • Working to raise Sense’s profile in the Welsh Assembly.
  • Responding to policy initiatives and engaging with the Welsh Government, both nationally and locally, as appropriate.
  • Researching, planning and organising effective strategies to ensure Welsh Government policies take account of the needs of deafblind people and those with complex needs.
  • Seeking opportunities to influence officials, Assembly Members and Ministers, and participating in relevant meetings.
  • Ensuring deafblind people and those with complex needs and their families have the skills, knowledge and access to engage directly with public policy debates

Skills and abilities

The right candidate for the role will be able to demonstrate

  • An In-depth understanding of legislative processes and political structures in Wales, alongside an appreciation of the political landscape.
  • An understanding of key policy issues related to disabled people and those with complex needs in Wales.
  • Evidence of building positive relationships with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders, policy makers and opinion formers.
  • Demonstrable track record of successfully influencing national organisations.
  • An exceptional level of written and spoken English (a basic understanding of Welsh is desirable).
  • Degree level qualification or equivalent relevant experience

And have the following skills and abilities

  • A commitment to delivering positive change in the lives of deafblind people and those with complex needs.
  • An ability to work autonomously to deliver both projects and day to day work to agreed timescales reliably, consistently and to a high standard
