Financial Controller

Overview

Schofield & Sims, a long established leading independent publisher of printed educational resources for the primary school and trade market, is seeking a commercially aware accountant to play a key role in the day-to-day running of the company and to assist with the implementation and delivery of long term growth plans.

Reporting directly to the CEO and working with the management team from friendly and stylish offices between Huddersfield and Wakefield, the role combines financial management with operational oversight.  The candidate will also be required to lead a small team of assistants. 

The successful candidate will be fully qualified with strong analytical skills and a good understanding of business processes. These requirements should be accompanied by a clear focus on commercial success and strong communication and negotiating skills. Most importantly, candidates should demonstrate the drive, energy and ability to make a significant contribution to the continuing success and growth of this family controlled company.  

Key responsibilities

Duties will include:  

  • production of monthly management accounts and management information;
  • budget and cashflow forecasts;
  • hands-on management of the company’s Sage book-keeping, sales order processing and stock management systems;
  • managing accounting staff;
  • year end accounts ready for audit;
  • overseeing the financial aspects of the company’s operations;
  • reviewing existing systems and devising and updating as appropriate;
  • training existing and additional staff as required.

Key features/attributes

  • CIMA/ACCA/ACA qualified
  • good technical and analytical ability
  • strong IT skills, with experience of Sage a distinct advantage
  • excellent levels of written and verbal communication
  • an interest in the book trade and education

The position has become vacant due to a retirement and a full handover will be given. 

This is a permanent position with prospects of advancement within the company and the remuneration package will be commensurate with the responsibility of the role.
