British Medical Association
National Director, BMA Wales
Cardiff with regular travel
The British Medical Association (BMA) occupies a unique and high profile position at the very heart of current debate over the future of healthcare provision in the UK. With over two thirds of practising doctors in membership, it is a voluntary association representing doctors from all branches of medicine. It operates as a professional association, a scientific and educational body, a publishing house and an independent trade union.
The BMA is UK wide, but the national health services their members work in are increasingly diversifying. There is a clear and growing need for the BMA in Wales to engage, respond and be credible partners in the health system, within the broad confines of BMA UK policies. This is central for effective representation and professional input into the collaborative approach to health care, particularly in Wales, taken by Welsh Government. As the new National Director for BMA Wales you will work closely with the Council to further develop the organisation throughout what will be a hugely challenging but exciting period of transformation for healthcare services in Wales.
The role
- Present and promote the interests of the BMA in Wales, in particular managing relationships at the most senior level with the Welsh Government and other related bodies, NHS employers and the media;
- Responsibility for the efficient running of BMA Wales, including full accountability for the prudent management of its budget and leadership of its staff; ensure the effective provision of high-level support to BMA Welsh Council and its various committees;
- Ensure the delivery of individual and collective advice and representation to the Association’s members in the workplace, in close co-operation with Regional Services colleagues across the UK and ensure effective working relationships are maintained within the context of a UK organisation.
The person
- Bring a track record of operating at senior management level in a high profile and politically complex organisation;
- Demonstrate highly developed negotiating, influencing and leadership skills with the ability to provide vision and direction;
- Ideally, bring experience and knowledge of health and health-related matters, alongside the ability to gain credibility with the membership in Wales and wider stakeholders.
