IT Technician at the Manchester Grammar School

The Manchester Grammar School is an independent boys’ school, with over 1500 pupils aged from 7 to 18. It is one of the leading schools in the country.

The schools Computer Services Department provide innovative, reliable IT services which are continually enhanced to exceed the requirements and expectations of the students and staff in order to support their education and roles as required.

There are currently four full time staff in the Computer Services Department. The successful applicant will join them in being able to deliver a high level of technical support in a professional and positive manner as well as contribute to the development of the IT services.

Job Description

Post title: IT Technician
Purpose: To provide technical support for incidents, problems and changes to the School’s IT estate in a professional, supportive and positive manner. To assist in the running and development of the school IT infrastructure.
Responsible to: Head of Computer Services and the Bursar
Liaising with: All staff and pupils, including the Head of Computer Services and other technical colleagues in particular, and external companies.
Special conditions of service: The post holder will be required to have a flexible approach to their work to meet to the needs of the School. This will include occasional evening and weekend work.
Leave Entitlement: In addition to public holidays, this appointment carries with it a leave entitlement of 21 days, as well as school closure days. Leave is to be taken at a time agreed in advance with the Head of Computer Services.
Salary and Grade: The salary for the post will be in the region of £19K / £20K
Hours of Work: 35 hours per week. This is a full year post.

Purpose and duties of the post

Purpose

  • Helpdesk: providing support to users (including staff, pupils and guests of the School).
  • Maintaining the working order of computer equipment and printing facilities.
  • IT infrastructure: assisting with the maintenance and associated reporting of all school computing hardware.
  • Audio-visual: the setup, maintenance of, and user support for, the School’s audio-visual and presentation facilities.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
1. Helpdesk

  • Deliver effective and efficient first-line support for staff, pupils and guests; this includes hardware and software installation, trouble-shooting and system configuration, and ensuring compliance with school operational requirements and relevant ICT regulations.
  • Hardware and software deployment, including, but not limited to, PCs, printers and AV equipment.
  • Network support for all users.
  • Assist the Head of Computer Services and other technical team members in the delivery of administrative and technical tasks.
  • Assist in liaising with all school departments in order to plan effectively, review and continually improve the service that the Computer Services Department offers.

2. IT Infrastructure

  • Hardware and software configuration, troubleshooting and setup.
  • Other minor infrastructure roles and tasks, as required by the Head of Computer Services.
  • Maintain the asset register.
  • Complete PAT testing of ICT equipment and maintain accurate records when carried out.

3. Audio-visual

  • Setup and operate audio-visual equipment in response to bookings made using the helpdesk system, the facilities room booking system or on the instruction of the Head of Computer Services.
  • Demonstrate to users the correct operation of the appropriate multimedia equipment, including projectors, interactive screens, DVD and Blu-ray players etc.
  • Undertake initial maintenance in teaching rooms and recommend further action when appropriate.
  • Provide general assistance for event organisers and presenters.
  • Maintain and create, where appropriate, user guides for audio-visual and information technology equipment within school.

4. General

  • In conjunction with the Head of Computer Services and other members of the Computer Services Department, ensure the effective oversight and completion of tasks allocated to the department on a daily basis.
  • Undertake any other duties, consistent with the purpose of the job, as may from time to time be assigned by the Head of Computer Services.

The post holder will be part of the school Non-Teaching support staff and will report to the Head of Computer Services. The Bursar has responsibility for all support staff and will be the point of contact for any contractual matters.

There will need to be a degree of flexibility about the hours depending on the needs of the school. The salary for the post will be in the region of £19K/ £20K.
