We’re looking for client-focused individuals with a proven track record in support and/or advice work, specifically in housing law, to join us as Mentoring Officers as part of an exciting new initiative.

Shelter is busy working across the North of England to deliver the brand new Transforming Rehabilitation Service. Specifically in Cumbria and Lancashire, the service consists of a resettlement element based in four prisons and a community integration element based in offices across the Cumbria and Lancashire area. The mentoring element will begin in October and will be designed to support long-term reduction in risk of reoffending through replication of desistance model. Put simply, it will empower individuals to move towards independence through positive relationships.

Benefits include 30 days annual leave, the possibility of flexible working and significant opportunities for learning and development.

Your key responsibilities:

  • Help introduce a more comprehensive custodial resettlement package, more structured through the gate service and a community integration service
  • Undertake needs and risk assessments, draw up action plans and provide information, support and advocacy for clients with complex needs
  • Work closely with Community Rehabilitation Company Responsible Officers and wider supply chain partners
  • Continually drive and develop mentoring services, support volunteer mentors recruited to the service and contribute to local service and policy development.

And what you’ll need:

  • A good understanding of housing law and knowledge of welfare benefits and debt gained in a support/advice role within a safeguarding framework, where you possibly supported/coached volunteers
  • Ideally, experience of working in the criminal justice system, with knowledge of the prison system an advantage, plus a proven ability to provide advocacy on behalf of clients to other agencies and authorities
  • Proficiency using a case management system and Microsoft Office applications
  • A collaborative, results-driven approach, great influencing skills, respect for others opinions and the ability to challenge the status quo, lead change and introduce new ideas.
