Mechanical Design Engineer

Overview

Working on a range of design and build projects.

You will be supporting client briefs from design, to product modification, to full build and assembly support

You should have a good grounding in mechanical engineering, an understanding of large fabrication of assemblies, and a good set of 2D and 3D CAD skills

Knowledge of hydraulics or pneumatics would also be advantageous.

Tasks

- Ensuring all legislative and safety criteria are met and adhered to.

- Ensuring all design criteria are met.

- Converting sales specifications into technical build files.

- Involved in setting and achieving cost reduction targets required to both maintain competitiveness and improve profitability.

- Review of existing model range, and specifications to ensure the most cost effective designs are achieved with regard to material content, price, quality and manufacture.

- Sourcing new products and components to replace/enhance existing items where benefits can be achieved.

- Manage own workloads.

- Be capable of producing technical drawings, using both 2D and 3D software.

- Capable of producing technical calculations to justify the design the decision making process.

- Setting the required parameters within the companies MRP system to manage and produce part files, and subsequently Bills of Materials.

- Measure, review and action the products performance.

- Playing a major role in New Product Development, providing support in terms of design, manufacture and ensuring coherence to current legislation.

- Producing the systems and documentation for vehicle type approval.

- Liaising with all functions of the business.

- Providing a source of engineering expertise/advice to other group companies.

- Managing the company’s technical library.

- Ensuring the upkeep of the companies design guide.

- Ensuring all technical documentation is kept current.

Requirements

- Ability to effectively communicate with all levels of the business environment.

- Have strong personal management skills.

- Able to set achievable own targets.

- Able to work as part of a team and, or on your own initiative.

- Able to effectively time manage.

- Ability to identify potential cost saving projects and manage the implementation.

- Ability to understand and translate sales/customer requirements into technical documentation for manufacture.

- Ability to build and maintain relationships with both suppliers, internal and external customers.

- IT Literate - experience of using MS packages including Outlook, Excel and Word (experience of using a recognised MRP system is desirable).

- Experience of working in the heavy engineering environment.

- Develop and produce calculations and safety factors.

- Proficient in the use of 3D cad software.

- Good technical understanding of large steel structures
