About the Servers and Storage Officer (Linux) role:
A Servers and Storage Officer is required by the Data Centre Services group within IT Services to help maintain and support essential college IT. It is our strategic vision that the Data Centre Services group will host all of the colleges' non-research server hardware and common infrastructure software. The group is currently responsible for over 500 Servers which provide a diverse range of services to staff and students.
This is a challenging and important position for a bright, motivated and enthusiastic systems administrator. The successful candidate will assist in running the College's central Servers and storage infrastructure and other core information systems and will contribute to the general running of the Data Centre Services group.
Key responsibilities of the Servers and Storage Officer (Linux):
The post holder will be responsible for various operational and development aspects of the hardware and operating systems that the college operates. These will include authentication and file storage systems plus a variety of other services.

Use technical expertise to create innovative solutions that address complex technical and business/research challenges.

Analyse cost of services for accuracy of charging and delivery of a cost effective, competitive service.

Plan, prioritise resources, manage risk and deliver business benefits in own work area, on time and within budget.

Monitor financial, technical and staff resources, using industry best practice to deliver value for money.

Manage relevant documentation, develop a plan to ensure continuous improvement and planned change control.

Provide advice on the analysis and interpretation of data; produce regular performance reports to contribute to informed decision making and continuous improvement.

Represent work area internally and externally to ensure appropriate representation and build upon specialist/sector knowledge.
- Provide expert guidance and contribute to strategic planning and the development of policy in the areas of responsibility.
- Monitor Servers and Storage infrastructure; including capacity planning, performance monitoring, problem resolution and backup/recovery processes to ensure a robust level of service to the business.
- Manage projects, plan technical work packages and act as technical lead for service development projects.
- Carry out requirements analysis and design including production of design proposals.
- Undertake systems development including implementation and integration with other systems.
Essential requirements of the Servers and Storage Officer (Linux):
Candidates should have a good degree in computer science or a related subject and have at least 5 years' experience of systems administration in a modern mixed Windows and Linux server environment.
With a strong background in several of the following technologies:

OS: RHEL, Solaris, Ubuntu

VMware Esxi, VMware View

IBM N-Series, V-Series management, Windows DFS

Directory Services: Active Directory or OpenLDAP

Single-Sign-On: Kerberos, Shibboleth2 or ADFS

Identity Management: FIM, Active Roles Server or other IAM system

Monitoring: SCOM or Cacti/Nagios

Experience of common networking service protocols TCP/IP, SMTP, HTTP, DNS and LDAP and modern software that provides such services is essential.

Well-developed analytical and problem solving skills, seeking cost effective solutions, managing resources to suit changing priorities.

A commitment to continually improve customer experience, delivering service level agreements (SLA's) and key performance indicators (KPI's).

Resilient and flexible with an innovative, solutions focused approach, able to operate at all levels.
