During a time of exciting growth and development, Thales UK are recruiting for an Apprentice Software Engineer to join our team of highly motivated and professional engineers based at our dedicated engineering site in Cheadle, Cheshire. The technology and systems expertise offered by teams at Thales Ground Transport Systems (GTS) power safe, reliable and efficient services to rail networks the world over. In the UK, we deliver advanced signalling, supervision and control, integrated communications, security and information systems for urban rail in addition to mainline rail and roads.
Our technology drives systems that are used in daily life, when booking rail tickets via National Rail Enquires aka Online Journey Planner to waiting at the station watching for departure times where information is provided by Darwin , both developed by GTS.
Before taking your next road trip, check the traffic conditions by visiting Traffic England developed by GTS. England's motorways and major A roads are managed by the Highways Agency using the National Traffic Information Service (NTIS) also developed by GTS.
Not forgetting Manchester Tram where GTS has been a key major contributor leading the design, build, installation, verification and validation of what is the UKs largest light rail.

• be a key member of the Software Development team based at the Thales site in Manchester, with the opportunity to collaborate with Thales sites across the UK.
• be part of a team of software developers working on various projects. Responsible for the coding, testing and configuration of high quality, robust software that meets customer requirements
• help us define our solution by working with Systems Engineering to develop requirements and a test strategy
• support our systems by working with customer support functions to ensure that currently deployed software products are maintained and working at all times
• build our strategy by working with the software management function to ensure that skills, technology and ways of working are developed and are the best possible
• some travel to client sites and other Thales UK sites will be required to support project. Therefore flexibility to travel and work at other locations is essential.
Desired skills, qualifications and experience
• Educated to A Level in maths, physics, computer science, IT or engineering or have successfully completed of a relevant Level 3 qualification
• Good communication skills and an enquiring mind
• A real problem solving mentality with a genuine interest in technology and engineering
• A talent for working well as part of a team
• Ideally, you will have IT or networking skills, or the ability to programme in a software language like Java, C++ or C, although this is not essential
• A solid appreciation of the engineering lifecycle is highly desirable
