Shipping Efficiency Operation Manager

Based in New York City or Oxford, England.

Background

The Carbon War Room is a catalytic non-profit founded by Sir Richard Branson that harness the power of entrepreneurs to implement market-driven solutions to climate change. The organization's unique approach focuses on bringing together successful entrepreneurs, business leaders, policy experts, researchers, and thought leaders to focus on market-driven solutions. The Carbon War Room identifies the barriers that are preventing market-based scale up of climate change solutions and thereby perpetuating the status quo. In addition to technology and policy gaps, these barriers include principle-agent problems, information gaps, and lack of common standards or metrics.

Rocky Mountain Institute has advanced market-based solutions that transform global energy use to create a clean, prosperous, and secure future. An independent, nonprofit think-and-do tank, RMI engages with businesses, communities, and institutions to accelerate and scale replicable solutions that drive the cost-effective shift from fossil fuels to efficiency and renewables.

In January 2015, Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI) and Carbon War Room (CWR) aligned to catalyze an energy revolution that can unlock the greatest wealth-creating opportunity in modern history. RMI and CWR will leverage together the agile power of markets to combat climate change, bolster economic prosperity, and tackle other social and environmental issues created by the global dependence on fossil fuels. The organizations' alliance will multiply their respective impacts by jointly accelerating demand and financing for low-carbon solutions that are technically feasible and cost effective today.

About the Shipping Efficiency Operation

The maritime shipping industry emits more CO2 than Germany and is the sixth largest producer of greenhouse gas emissions globally. Despite being the most efficient method of cargo transport, because over 90% of the world's goods are transported by sea, the industry emits more than 1 billion tons of CO2e per year. The mission of CWR's shipping operation is to reduce carbon emissions by bridging gaps in market information related to environmental efficiency, encouraging key demand-side stakeholders to embed efficiency into decision-making, and unlocking capital flow for technology retrofits.
