Linux Engineer - Python/Perl/SQL
SOS Children's Villages is a global charity, which provides orphans and vulnerable children with a stable and positive family life. We protect and improve the lives of children in 125 countries, working with communities to keep fragmenting families together and where this is not possible, we build new families for children at risk.
SOS Children's Villages UK is a Promoter and Supporter Association (PSA) of SOS Children's Villages International with a strong focus on digital marketing on online donations.
We are looking for an experienced Linux Engineer to manage the day to day running of our web infrastructure. Our Servers are hosted on Linux virtual machines (Centos 7 64 bit). Your primary responsibility is to make our web sites achieve industry leading availability and performance.
The ideal candidate will probably come from a Linux or Infrastructure support background and have a deep understanding of the work required to support an entire web facing IT function.
Key skills
- Linux system administration (RedHat/Centos)
- Apache HTTPD (mod_cache, mod_ssl, mod_rewrite)
- Domain and SSL certificate management
- DNS configuration
- Linux Firewall
- Shell script
- At least one of Perl or Python
- SQL (writing occasional queries for reporting purposes)
- Mail Server (postfix or qmail)
- Configuration management (subversion)
Key responsibilities
- Ensuring the availability and functionality of web facing systems and infrastructure by pro-actively monitoring, maintaining and upgrading these systems and their interaction with third party services
- Maintain and improve the documentation required to support the systems
- Become a valued member of the digital marketing team providing technical insight for its non-technical members
- Comfortable working independently and managing your own workload
- Managing relationship with third party services and providing support to the rest of the charity when interacting with these services
- Managing the timely and successful resolution of requests coming in from the charity
- Perform very occasional early morning (0700) deployments of new versions of our applications to avoid downtime during busy periods
