An opportunity has arisen for an Operations Supervisor to manage a team of operatives and volunteers who contribute to the maintenance, conservation and improvement of the London Dockland waterway. As an experienced people manager, you will take full responsibility for your team and oversee key relationships with third party stakeholders.

You will take the lead by encouraging the team to take responsibility for the safety of colleagues, volunteers, themselves and customers.

Canal and River Trust operate an annualised hours system which includes various shift patterns to include weekends.

  • Management and delivery of small planned maintenance tasks to scheduled timescales of planned preventative maintenance (PPM)
  • Management and delivery of volunteer activities and events. The post holder will take full responsibility for the growth and retention demonstrating levels of excellence as a representative of the Trust.
  • Executing a high level of customer service to meet the needs of both internal and external customers. The post holder will have full involvement in engaging the local community and associated groups.
  • Complying with the Canal & River Trust’s Health & Safety policy and defined standards
  • Undertaking risk assessments, investigating and reporting incidents and near misses, ensuring the safety of colleagues and volunteers at all times
  • Managing water resource as a key task to minimise waste (full training will be given on all water control responsibility)
  • People management including: recruitment, rota planning, performance reviewing, training and development planning and employee engagement.

Due to the nature of the role, management experience is essential together with experience of operating and maintaining plant/tool equipment. A large percentage of your time will be spent on the waterway, however you will also perform office based tasks with some administrative support.

The ideal candidate will hold NVQ Level III Health and Safety (or equivalent) or be willing to attain the qualification within 18 months.

You can expect full training all aspects of the London Docklands waterspace, working with an experienced team of operatives and volunteers. Previous experience of working with volunteers is highly desirable.
