We are looking for an individual who is a team player and able to work on their own initiative with the ability to propose and implement solutions to problems to join a small team. An understanding of ITIL is essential with the ability to apply its principles to this role. Good communication skills are essential as the job involves interacting with customers, third party suppliers, business stakeholders and project managers. This post may involve leading on major projects so good project management skills are desirable. The nature of the job lends itself to someone with good analytical and problem solving skills. Experience and confidence in working from the command line, use of vi and Shell Scripting is also a key part of the job.

The UNIX team is responsible for the management and system administration of over 60 Oracle Servers running a mixture of Oracle Solaris 10 and 11. These Servers host services for many of the council's key departments, eg Social Services, Contact Centre, Finance, Planning, Housing, HR & Payroll, Council Tax & Benefits.
The platforms range from mid-range to high end enterprise class Servers from Oracle. The hardware makes use of Chip Multi-Threading which delivers high performance/low power consumption with over 100 virtual CPUs per server. High availability is achieved through site to site vitalisation, SAN mirroring, SAN boot disks, NetApp SnapShots, IP multi-pathing and swappable system or I/O boards. The team proactively monitor, upgrade and implement fixes to the hardware and the Oracle OS, carry out disaster recovery trials, build and configure Servers and ensure that the UNIX estate is secure.

*Implementing measures to ensure full security of the UNIX infrastructure
*Shell Scripting
*Installing Solaris/UNIX/Linux Operating Systems.Patching operating systems
*Installation of various software components
*Dynamic Reconfiguration of system and I/O boards
*Network troubleshooting
*Server decommissioning
*SVM and ZFS file system administration
*Provisioning of zones and logical domains (LDOMs)
*Allocation of resources to Servers/users (such as memory, disk, CPUs etc.)
*Performance and tuning (P&T)
*File transfers, SFTP (with keys)
*UNIX user/printer/Sudo administration
*Setting up network shares (such as NFS or Samba)
*Involvement in the procurement of hardware
*Dealing with service desk calls & ensuring resolution within SLA targets
*Updating the CMDB and keeping accurate records
*Working to quality standards
*Backup/restore activities using NetBackup
*Raising third party support calls and managing any resulting onsite visits
*Proactive server estate monitoring
*Capacity planning/business continuity planning
*Taking part in on-call activities and out of hours support where required

The individual will have experience of integrating Servers into large SAN and NAS storage environments. It is also highly desirable that they can provide high availability of systems which use enterprise databases (such as Oracle, Ingres, Progress) with web server front ends (such as Apache, Tomcat). Other skills should include a detailed understanding of virtual server management (eg Solaris zones), ZFS file systems, Shell Scripting and file sharing/transfer (such as Samba, SFTP).

Experience of dealing with helpdesk calls, working in secure datacentres, performing OS patching, utilising tape/disk backup solutions and taking part in out of hours support is also required
