Engineering Manager

Professional mechanical engineer required for a busy plastic moulding company based in Bury.  Machines are mostly PLC controlled large Gas fired ovens with chain driven rotating boom arms.  Operations are run across two sites in Bury.

The position will require a hands-on approach with maintenance and repair functions carried out on site by the maintenance team.  Plant and factory maintenance will be the focus of the role however some time will involve the manufacture of jigs and fixtures for production items

The successful candidate will assume responsibility for the management of a small maintenance team and will report to the General Manager. 

Main Responsibilities

Maintain and service all machinery; including mechanical and electrical aspects. This may involve longer hours in the event of a machine breakdown.  There will also be an out of hours call out aspect to the role and engineering cover will need to be provided during these times.

To solve problems efficiently and effectively, and carry out preventative maintenance duties to ensure breakdowns and downtime on the machines are minimised. To be instrumental in the revision of the company’s preventative maintenance system with the aim of reducing overall downtime costs.

Troubleshoot faults with mechanical, electrical, hydraulic and pneumatic systems in a wide variety of situations

To carry out all site electrical maintenance and repairs, and provide support to all areas of the business when required. 

To be time served, qualified and skilled in all areas of their trade. Work well in within a small team focused on Continual Improvement Process and become a flexible not dependant member of the team. 

To source and develop relationships with reliable contractors and to ensure that all works on site are completed within the scope of agreed method statements and risk assessments.

To ensure that all engineering works are properly assessed for risks and such assessments are documented before maintenance/engineering works are commenced and any relevant permits to works issued.

Become involved in process Improvement teams and become a Pro-active not Re-active member. Adopt a Right First Time approach. 

Be up to date with current legislation 17th edition and PAT testing techniques.

To assist in updating and compiling all relevant machinery drawings and diagrams.

Perform routine checks such as fire alarm tests and PAT testing

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

Maintenance and mechanical experience and electrical qualifications, 17th edition desired
This is a hands on job requiring engineering skill levels to technician level or similar/higher
Good welding technique for basic work – MIG welding
Knowledge of with electrical and mechanical maintenance procedures an advantage
Knowledge of hydraulic and pneumatic systemsan advantage.
Conversant with control gear and PLC systems.
Applicants with a background in production machinery preferred.
Conversant with H&S rules, Machinery Legislation, PUWER regulations and best practices
Knowledge of manual handling
