About Us

The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) is a publicly funded organisation responsible for supporting, co-ordinating and promoting research, innovation and skills development. Our uniqueness lies in the breadth of our remit and the sheer diversity of our portfolio, as we harness our world-leading expertise, facilities and resources to drive science and technology forward.

STFC's Central Laser Facility (CLF) provides scientists from the UK and Europe with an unparalleled range of state-of-the-art Laser technology.

About the role

The CLF's OCTOPUS Facility is a pioneering new concept in biomedical research which rallies expertise, techniques and infrastructure to generate and exploit data for understanding biological processes at the molecular level from cells to single molecules.

We have an opportunity for an experienced Scientific Programmer/Researcher to fill the role of Data Management and Analysis Scientist integrating OCTOPUS instrument data and analysis software and hardware.

The key output of this role will be an

integrated data management and data processing management suite for OCTOPUS, providing secure storage of raw and processed data from OCTOPUS instruments, and the processing and analysis of this data. The system will allow rapid and flexible definition and integration of new dataset types, metadata and data processing/visualisation tools.

Duties will include:

  • Completing and rolling-out the integrated pipeline for single-molecule microscopy tracking and analysis, linking the in-house developed tools for acquisition and analysis with the ICAT Job Portal (IJP) developed within STFC.
  • Integrating further OCTOPUS instruments and techniques, eg super-resolution microscopy, including both in-house and externally developed tools, using both IJP and OMERO.
  • Integration of IJP and OMERO capabilities into a consistent solution.
  • Contributing to data analysis developments in the OCTOPUS facility.

You will disseminate your work through publications in scientific journals and presentations at conferences.

There will be a requirement for occasional travel.

About you

You will hold a PhD or equivalent experience in a relevant discipline.

You should have experience in software development from a scientific or technical research environment, and experience in the management and processing of scientific data.

You will have experience in quantitative image/data analysis algorithm development and implementation, and experience of a variety of modern programming languages (ideally including Python, C/C++, Java), and experience in a Linux development environment.

Further experience in project management, development of data models, High Performance Computing, algorithm optimisation, parallelisation and GPU computation is welcome but not essential.

You should be self-motivated, confident to challenge colleagues on technical issues, and demonstrate good communication skills to work with both scientific peers and non-specialists.

Benefits

We have a strong emphasis on training and a commitment to continued professional development.

In addition to the competitive salary, an excellent index linked pension scheme, 30 days leave allowance and flexi-time are offered. Full details of offered benefits can be found on STFC's careers pages. A relocation allowance may also be available.

The closing date for applications is 31 January 2015, however, we encourage early applications as some candidates may be interviewed before this date.
