Software Developers (Java Back End/responsive web Front End) - IRC165033

STFC Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, Harwell, Oxfordshire

GBP28,384 - GBP34,002 (dependent upon qualifications and experience)

About Us
The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) is a publicly funded organisation that is responsible for supporting, co-ordinating and promoting research, innovation and skills development. Our uniqueness lies in the breadth of our remit and the sheer diversity of our portfolio, as we harness our world-leading expertise, facilities and resources to drive science and technology forward.

STFC's ISIS facility is a leading centre for research in the physical and life sciences. Our suite of neutron and muon instruments gives unique insights into the properties of materials on the atomic scale.

About the role

STFC'S ISIS Division is now looking to recruit enthusiastic Software Developers to develop enterprise systems and work closely with fellow engineers and scientists to provide software to support the business of science.

Our team consists of both Back End Java EE developers and Front End developers using ASP.NET (C#) with JavaScript, HTML5, CSS3, etc.

These roles offer an exciting opportunity to work in an environment supporting a national and international community of more than 3000 scientists for research into subjects ranging from clean energy and the environment, pharmaceuticals and health care, through to nanotechnology, materials engineering and IT.

You will be involved in all aspects of the software development throughout the project life cycle, from initial requirements analysis through to maintenance.

Further responsibilities will include:

  • Working with fellow Software Developers in the team to design, code, test and deploy software.
  • Delivering significant software modules in an agile development environment.
  • Working with customers as they try out and accept our applications, advising and assisting as necessary.
  • Providing support to customers around the world (internal and external to the organisation).
  • Preparing and delivering training to internal customers.

You will further your own skills and experience through the projects on which you will work, and we will provide the support and training needed for career development.

You will occasionally get the opportunity to travel around the UK, Europe and further afield.

About you

To be suitable for this role you should have a BSc (min 2.1) in a technology-related discipline (or equivalent qualification or experience).

You will also have a solid understanding of the theory underpinning object-oriented programming and relational databases, experience of Java EE (or similar) for Back End development and/or experience of web development including using Front End frameworks (eg AngularJS), RESTful web services, and Front End task runners and testing frameworks as well as experience in developing tiered systems using enterprise technologies.

You will also demonstrate good interpersonal skills for supporting software with staff and facility visitors, and enthusiasm to work in a dynamic, agile team environment on several projects at once, with plenty of opportunities to learn new skills and try out new technologies.

Benefits

We have a strong emphasis on training and a commitment to continued professional development.

In addition to the competitive salary, an excellent index linked pension scheme, 30 days leave allowance and flexi-time are offered.

The closing date for applications is 11 January 2015; however, we encourage early applications as some candidates may be interviewed before this date.
