Thales Land and Air Systems division develops the complete airspace security solution for civil and military customers as well as addressing the needs of land forces involved in conventional and asymmetric operations.
We are sourcing a Senior Mechanical Engineer within the Optronics site in Glasgow, Scotland. Reporting into the Head of Discipline Opto-Mechanical.
Our main products are imaging, detection, ranging and search and track systems operating within the infrared and visible wavebands.
The Senior Mechanical Engineer input is seen as a key differentiator within the development of our products.
This role will strengthen our capability in this area and help to develop new and existing products.
The successful candidate will be part of the Mechanical discipline and will be involved in projects from concept stage through to in-service support.
Key Responsibilities for the Senior Mechanical Engineer:
Development and design of Opto- Mechanical systems for diverse land, sea and air applications
Modelling using CREO and other Mechanical Design Software
Test and Production support
Assess merits of different design concepts and perform trade-off analyses
Work in multi-disciplinary teams
Skills
Essential
An excellent understanding of the fundamentals of Mechanical Engineering
Proven design experience in related industry
A current working knowledge of Mechanical CAD and Finite Element Analysis
Self motivated and capable of working alone and within teams
Good written and oral communication skills to allow effective communication with peers, and both technical and non-technical customers.
Desirable
Knowledge of Optical instruments and lasers
Familiarity with basic optical theory and principles
Good practical and experimental skills
Working knowledge of CREO 2 Mechanical CAD
Working knowledge of Ansys V13
Materials knowledge
Experience:
Essential
A proven record within a mechanical design environment
Desirable
Design of precision opto-mechanical assemblies
Sub-sea environment
Design for military environments
Design of castings
Design of plastic moulded parts

Qualifications:
Essential
Degree or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering
