aSoftware Engineer/Computational Scientist
STFC Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, Harwell, Oxfordshire
GBP28,384 to GBP37,534 (dependent upon qualifications and experience)
2 Years Fixed Term
About Us
The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) is a publicly funded organisation that is responsible for supporting, co-ordinating and promoting research, innovation and skills development. Our uniqueness lies in the breadth of our remit and the sheer diversity of our portfolio, as we harness our world-leading expertise, facilities and resources to drive science and technology forward.
STFC's Scientific Computing Department (SCD) provides leading edge computer and data storage infrastructure to support the work of world class science both within STFC, the UK and internationally.
About the role
Within SCD The Software Engineering Group is a small team which provides software engineering expertise and support to a wide range of research groups within the UK research community, as well as engaging in a number of collaborative R&D projects in specific areas of computational science and high performance computing.
We now require an experienced software engineer/computational scientist to take a leading role in the EPSRC funded SoFT project on a 2 year fixed term basis. SoFT is a collaboration between STFC, Plymouth University and Manchester Metropolitan University with the goal of designing and implementing a virtual experimental wave tank to study wave/structure interactions.
The post holder will be involved in all aspects of the Software Engineering Group's programmes but will focus on the SoFT project.
Duties will include:
- Participating in the requirements gathering, design and implementation of the SoFT framework.
- Participating in acquiring, assessing and deploying advanced CFD, visualisation and software engineering tools to aid the implementation of the SoFT framework.
- Involvement in tools development, integration and performance improvement.
- Pro-actively assisting and supporting users of tools in their use and deployment.
- Development and optimization of HPC applications.
About you
Suitable candidates will be educated to degree level or above in an appropriate discipline.
The position requires extensive technical knowledge and experience in scientific computing, high performance computing, parallel computing and software engineering. Experience in the design and implementation of large complex scientific applications on high performance systems such as the National HPC Service would be a distinct advantage as would experience in formal software design, testing and quality assurance.
You should also have experience in large scale software development in C and C++, experience in developing High Performance Computing Applications using MPI, experience in giving seminars and workshops, and in preparation of papers, documentation and reports.
You should have proven ability to deliver on complex R&D projects and an ability to plan, prepare and deliver training courses.
Candidates should have excellent written and verbal communication skills, a proactive approach to planning and problem solving, excellent organisational skills and an ability to cope with high levels of uncertainty and with minimum of supervision.
Benefits
We have a strong emphasis on training and a commitment to continued professional development.
In addition to the competitive salary, an excellent index linked pension scheme, 30 days leave allowance and flexi-time are offered. Full details of offered benefits can be found on STFC's careers pages. A relocation allowance may also be available where applicable.
The closing date for applications is 14 December 2014, however, we encourage early applications as some candidates may be interviewed before this date.
