Cycling Instructor
Countywide
Salary, working hours & location

Prior to accreditation and induction, the rate of pay is £8.58 per hour plus 14% holiday pay. Upon completion of accreditation and induction, the rate of pay is £10.07 per hour plus 14% holiday pay.

This is a zero hours (bank) contract. The amount of work you would be offered would depend on the number of requests for training we received. Some times of the year are busier than others and you should expect to have some weeks when no work would be available to you.

Please note that one of our main courses, Bikeability Level 2, lasts for two hours per day over five days, and it is better for trainees if the same Instructors are available for the whole course.

We periodically ask Instructors to give us an idea of their availability and then, after we have matched that to the training requests we have, we send a provisional work schedule to each Instructor. We usually seek final confirmation from both the client and the Instructor a week or two before a course is scheduled to start. Now and again clients withdraw at short notice, on the other hand we are sometimes requested to provide training at short notice.

Your place of work would be where you'd be delivering the training so it would vary. We deliver cycle training in all parts of the County but endeavour to offer work to Instructors that does not involve too much travel. However, we do make an allowance for travelling expenses and other expenses incurred.
Additional Information

Successful candidates will need to undertake an Instructor course, provided free of charge, to gain provisional national accreditation. If successful, this is followed by an induction and full accreditation assessment, which also need to be completed successfully.

We welcome candidates who already have National Standard accreditation, however an induction period would still apply.

The Role
Surrey County Council cycle training service helps over 11,000 people a year across the County to ride more safely and confidently on the road. Our clients range from complete beginners to people who want to cycle on busy roads. The majority of our training is school-based but the number of adults we train is steadily increasing. This is very rewarding work.

Cycling Instructors assess and train clients in cycling skills and safety, in accordance with the National Standard for Cycle Training. You will need to be able to:
- Deliver the National Standard programme and make it an enjoyable experience for clients.
- Identify and control risk.
- Use teaching methods that are appropriate to individuals’ needs.
- Follow our code of conduct.
- Record course outcomes and undertake other administrative tasks.
- Be confident cycling in traffic.
- Undertake ongoing training to improve your own skills.
- Work effectively with Co-Instructors.

About the Team
Surrey County Council employs 70 Instructors supported by a small administration staff.

Our Instructors live in all different parts of the County. Most of our training is delivered by Instructors working in teams, although we do also offer 'customised' training, which can be one-to-one with the client.

Surrey County Council is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and vulnerable adults and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.

We want to be an inclusive and diverse employer of first choice, reflecting the community we serve and particularly welcome applications from all under-represented groups.
