Linux & OPEN SYSTEMS LEAD DEVELOPER/ADMINISTRATOR

The Information Services department at the University of Westminster provides IT services to the entire University.  As part of the IT infrastructure group, the Open Systems team provides two core services: the virtual server farm, storage & backup, underpinning the University's IT service; and Unix/Linux & Netware services.

We are looking for an experienced Linux developer/administrator. You will lead the management, development and security of our Unix/Linux infrastructure, and the migration away from Legacy Netware services.  You will evaluate solutions, plan upgrades, and develop supplier relationships.

You should be familiar with virtualisation, storage networks, and backup. You will install and integrate new Servers, monitor performance & capacity, design and code scripts, and automate processes. You will support backup, disaster recovery, and business continuity.

You should be proficient with Unix at the command line and be able to demonstrate significant experience in several of the following areas: Linux; Solaris; web services (Apache, Tomcat); Scripting (eg Perl, bash, Python, or PHP); configuration management; mail; DNS; databases. You will have working knowledge of TCP/IP, including subnetting and routing.

Any experience with integrating Unix with Active Directory, familiarity with Novell services (file, E-Directory, NAM), and an understanding of data centre infrastructure, would be an advantage.

You will have a degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience, and have experience of working in an enterprise IT environment or ISP. We are looking for someone with good communication skills, and an approachable demeanour, who can think analytically, and who pays close attention to detail. You will work closely with other members of the team, investigate service problems, and provide third line support to the department. Experience of ITIL-based environments would be useful.  There will be a short technical test as part of the interview.

This is an exciting time to join the University of Westminster whilst we invest millions in changes to our campus and infrastructure to create London's ultimate student experience.
