Systems Administrator & Developer (Developer, Administrator, Linux)
Job location: Bristol
Salary: Pay is competitive, including annual bonus scheme, pension and other benefits.
Job start: November 2014

Company description:

Prevailing is a leading wind energy engineering consultancy. We are based in the UK, Germany and the US, and work on projects globally. We are involved throughout the development and operation of industrial scale, onshore wind farms, from early-stage feasibility studies to assessments of wind turbine production data. Our clients include some of the largest companies in the global renewables sector, as well as smaller, independent wind farm developers and operators. Prevailing is a small, fast-growing business with an energetic team environment. Using our capabilities and experience, we aim to support our clients in designing and building better wind farms.

Job description for the Systems Administrator & Developer (Developer, Administrator, Linux):

Our IT systems support 16 staff across three countries and include an open source HPC facility, VPNs, Linux servers, mobile computing, data processing and more. As a fast-growing engineering company, a diverse and professional infrastructure is a necessity. We are looking for the right person to support and implement these systems.

Initially the Systems Administrator & Developer (Developer, Administrator, Linux) role will focus on developing a secure and reliable network including Linux servers, VPNs and data synchronising, building on the current implementations. Data security is crucial to us and our clients. We are looking for a "safety first" approach to the design/test/implementation cycle, and strong experience in security and backup automation.

The Systems Administrator & Developer (Developer, Administrator, Linux) will be an essential part of the team, proactive across all topics, from automated cross-office data synchronisation to fixing the printer. IT is critical to our future success, and the sysadmin will work within, not separate to, the engineering team.

Once sysadmin workload reduces to a maintenance level, it is expected that the successful candidate will be involved increasingly in the design and development of server and web based applications, in order to support the wider engineering work of Prevailing.

Requirements for the Systems Administrator & Developer (Developer, Administrator, Linux) role:

Essential:
• Several years of relevant experience
• Track record of excellent data security
• "Safety first" approach to testing
• Linux (ideally Ubuntu) system administration
• Rsync
• Python
• Windows laptop configuration
• Network and VPN management

Desirable:
• Good degree in a numeric subject
• MPI cluster implementation
• PHP
• Database design
• C# with LINQ, mono.
