Thales are looking for an Acoustics Engineer to join our team based in Somerset working as part of a team that designs and manufactures a wide range of products incorporating acoustic sensors used in the marine environment. This is a great opportunity for an Acoustics Engineer to join at a time where they will be required to support and design the next phase generation of transducers and acoustic equipment within Thales UK. The Acoustic Engineer covers all aspects of acoustic transducers from initial specifications, through hands on development, supporting manufacturing teams in construction, through to continuing in service support.

Principal Relationships:
The role reports to the Acoustics and Materials group manager
Good working relationships are required with:
Work Package Managers for current tasks Technical solution and programme updates
Members of the Acoustics Group Peer members working on related tasks
Manufacturing group staff.
Liaison with other members of the Hardware Engineering community

Key Responsibilities and Tasks:
Working as part of multi-discipline teams
Supporting the development of acoustic transducers, with technical direction from the senior engineers within the team. This will embrace the following activities:
Generating and capturing requirements
Compilation of trials plans, technical reports and manufacturing specifications
In water testing of transducers
Theoretical modelling of transducer performance
Validation of design through formal qualification
Identification of the best manufacturing process for efficient production of the acoustic component
Evaluation of new and novel technologies
Application of engineering rigour and adherence to the Thales Referential System
Support to acoustic component definition for bids

Skills:
Of graduate calibre, with a solid engineering background in the field of acoustics, transducers or similar products. Training can be provided for candidates with a grounding in this area.
Any experience of Sonar transducer design, acoustic product requirements development, acoustic modelling techniques, acoustic calibration and measurement techniques, or acoustic product validation methods is highly desirable.
A strong communicator, able to demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively across a wide range of project teams.
A solid team player that must be self-motivated and capable of working both as a team member and autonomously.

Experience:
Essential
To be able to work in a team environment to ensure that the design solutions proposed are robust, have the minimum of risk and can be readily manufactured.

Desirable
Defining solutions and producing estimates in support of bids
Hardware development projects from concept through to production.
A background in product based organisations
Knowledge of Thales referential system

Qualifications:
Degree level or above
