Qualifications

  • First level registration with experience in caring for patients with palliative care needs

  • The lymphoedema theory and practice level 2 module

  • A relevant diploma / degree or evidence of working towards this qualification.

Overall Objective

  • To work within the guidelines of the British Lymphology Society (BLS) and International Concensus Best Practice for the Management of Patients with Lymphoedema.

  • To provide holistic individualised nursing care to lymphoedema patients with chronic disease and life limiting illness.

  • To provide support to patients and their carers and include them appropriately in any decision making process.

  • To work effectively with the multidisciplinary team, ensuring a high standard of patient care.

Job Profile

The Lymphoedema nurse is responsible for acquiring and maintaining competence in current Lymphoedema management in accordance with the British Lymphology Society (BLS) Guidelines and International Best Practice for the Management of Lymphoedema.  This will include the ability to educate patients and carers towards self-management in the 4 cornerstones of Lymphoedema Management (skin care, exercise, compression hosiery and simple lymphatic drainage massage).

Clinical Responsibilities

  • To become a competent practitioner and work within the BLS Guidelines and the NMC Code of Professional Conduct.To be self-aware of your limitations in knowledge and skills and to seek guidance when appropriate from the senior members of the Lymphoedema team.

  • To be aware of the current changes and influences in Nursing, Lymphoedema, cancer and palliative care.

  • To assist in the delivery of individualised treatment plans for mild/moderate lymphoedema and assist patients and carer’s to make informed choices and decisions in relation to their treatment.

  • To implement the 4 cornerstones of lymphoedema management monitoring and recording the effects of these interventions through structured evaluation.

  • To provide emotional and psychological support to Lymphoedema patients with chronic disease and life limiting illness.

  • To liaise with and provide relevant information to other members of the MDT.

  • To participate in Clinical Governance including Audit and Risk management to improve practice.An allocated area of shared responsibility/practice development will be highlighted.

  • To use reflection and undertake clinical supervision to develop own practice.

  • Maintain adequate patient records ensuring all relevant information is recorded i.e. written in the medical notes and database.

  • Ensure cost effective use of resources including hosiery, bandages and equipment.

  • To be aware of the need for confidentiality with patients and carers.

Educational and Personal Responsibilities

 

  • To be responsible for maintaining and demonstrating a personal awareness of professional development in Nursing and particularly Lymphoedema management and palliative care.

  • To undertake appropriate/identified education and training in professional development that will meet both own needs and the organisations.

  • Maintain Prep requirements including mandatory training.
