Scientific/Software Developer

British Oceanographic Data Centre (BODC), National Oceanography Centre (NOC), Liverpool

About the role

Based at our Liverpool site, you will work in the BODC IT team to develop our core software systems that manage, visualise and distribute large complex data sets. You will also be part of project teams, working with our data scientists, to deliver project-specific tools and software products. As we provide an end-to-end data management service, the role is varied and you will contribute to Back End database work, middle tier web-service development and UI development. You will also gain experience in requirements gathering and documentation.

The appointment is for a fixed term of three years with the possibility of extension.

Salary:

GBP19,937 to GBP30,000, depending on experience.

About you

To be successful in this role you will need to be a scientifically minded software developer. You will have a good honours degree (or masters) in Computer Science or a science degree with a significant software component. You need to be able to write easy to use, scalable web applications and be confident to do this in a variety of technologies, including Java, Javascript, PL/SQL, Python and MATLAB. You must be self-motivated with good communication, planning and problem solving skills. An interest in marine science and working with scientific data would be an advantage.

What we can offer you

In addition, we offer a public sector pension scheme, a generous allowance of 30 days' annual leave and 10?? days' public and privilege holiday per annum. We operate flexi-time in a relaxed scientific environment. We invest in our team and further training and skills development will be available.

About us

The British Oceanographic Data Centre is part of a worldwide network of oceanographic data centres created to support global, regional and climate-related studies of the world's oceans. We are at the forefront of managing and disseminating large, complex environmental data sets. We are a component of NERC's environmental data centre network and collaborate widely with other national data centres, on international initiatives, to make data discoverable and easily available to scientists, the marine community, industry and the public.
