The Database Administrator / DBA Architect Opportunity:
As a DBA Architect the candidate will be responsible for technical and operational activities regarding the group’s databases. Working in a team of three DBAs, the candidate will have both a strong DBA and DB Developer background, as well as high level architectural experience with Oracle. This is a busy hands-on role and will require the candidate to engage in all DBA, development related activities. The candidate will have a working knowledge of Oracle in an enterprise environment.

The Database Administrator / DBA Architect Role:
The candidate will have proven in-depth PL/SQL development experience (stored procedures, triggers, functions). The candidate will be the key resource for PL/SQL knowledge. The successful candidate should be familiar with installing and performance tuning Oracle installations on Solaris, Linux and Windows operating Systems and must be comfortable with scripting in Bash, Perl or similar.
The Database team is migrating a busy Sybase OLTP database to Oracle, providing access control to a public facing web site, a large Sybase warehouse containing reporting related data and a small number of chemical focused Oracle databases. The group’s Agile and Test Driven approaches require the team to support a number of development and QA environments. The production databases are used globally with an expectation of 24/7 availability, high performance and continuous monitoring & alerting (via automated tools). Only a minimum of planned downtime is acceptable.
The successful candidate should be a strong communicator, and have the ability to engage with Java, Business, Systems and Architecture teams.
Database Administrator / DBA Architect Selection Criteria:
> Working knowledge of Sybase
> Good knowledge of Oracle
> Proven experience of product and solution management, data modelling, software definition and architecture. Also have operational responsibilities for business critical systems
> Good working knowledge of all standard development methodologies such as waterfall and Agile
> Strong background in Test Driven Development
> Wide experience of industry standard technologies and specialist tools and solutions in areas such as data management systems, delivery technologies
> Domain expertise in areas such as chemistry, text analytics, data and content management
> In depth experience of publishing and publishing technologies
> Experience with evaluating technology partners and solutions
> Experience managing projects and leading teams
> Ability to identify synergies across the business and technology solutions
> The successful candidate must be highly organised self-starter and have the ability to be creative
> Attention to the right detail
> Must have analytical and problem solving skills
> Experience and good track record with working with other team leaders within the team as well as colleagues/teams in other locations
> Educated to University Degree level or equivalent training/experience in the technology arena
> Communicate in clear, expressive English
