Our client is looking to recruit a Development Director; this is a new post underpinned by a fresh approach to the promotion of philanthropy. It has been introduced following work with successful practitioners from elsewhere in the UK movement. Trustees and staff are committed to promoting the philanthropy services of the company to a new audience of potential donors with the aim of securing a substantial growth in funds. This is a challenging and exciting opportunity to take the company to the next level. It will mean securing £1-2 million per annum in long terms funds from new donors on a regular basis once the programme is fully operational (within 12-18 months).

Role Purpose
The company seeks continuous income growth in order to increase the associated value of grants distributed. A member of the Senior Management Team (SMT), the Development Director provides a critical contribution to strategy development, anticipating and proactively preparing for changes and opportunities in philanthropic giving. The Development Director works collaboratively with the SMT, staff and Trustees in ensuring the Foundation provides excellent customer service to existing and potential donors, partners and stakeholders.

Key accountabilities of the role
• To prepare and deliver the company’s Fund Development strategy and associated annual business plans, reporting on progress made to the CEO, Board of Trustees and relevant committees and to take appropriate action to ensure that annual objectives, including financial targets are met.
• To provide a professional service to donors, fund holders and other stakeholders, resulting in the retention of their continued support. In collaboration with the Chief Operating Officer, ensure donors’ grant preferences are managed effectively and that communications concerning fund activity is timely and meets their needs.
• To strengthen the research facilities, to identify and track potential donors and make effective use of their databases to develop relationships with donors.
• To increase the proportion of funds delivered through income streams other than through existing fund holders.
• To ensure they provide a tailored service to new fund holders, whilst continuously designing and promoting funds, including discretionary funds, which facilitate a sustainable grants programme.
• To deliver annual plans for each income stream identified under Fund Development in the 3 year plan, resulting in a cost effective increase in their respective fund value.
• To be an active member of the Senior Management Team, providing strategic leadership and playing a senior role in the promotion and development of the company.
• Working with the Chief Operating Officer to ensure that there is synergy between fund development and grant making at all levels of the organisation, from strategy through to operations.
• To administer the Fund Development Committee, or any other Committees that have oversight of donor and fund holder customer service. To provide support to other committees as required.
• To accept other responsibilities and activities that may present themselves to the company, subject to additional duties and responsibilities falling within the experience and remit of the post.
• It is essential that in any written application evidence of examples of proven experience in each of the selection criteria above, of the person specification is provided. These responses will be developed and discussed with all candidates selected for interview, together with the other criteria listed.

Knowledge and experience
• Strong track record of achievement, gained at senior management level, in the field of sales, marketing, finance or business development.
• Proven experience of building and maintaining high-value relationships and networks, with an understanding of the principles that underpin successful donor and client relationships.
• Experience of income generation, underpinned by a thorough appreciation of the range of potential sources of income available to community foundations and the organisations that they work with and support.
• Evidence of having made an active contribution to the Board or senior leadership team.
• Strong evidence of shaping, developing and delivering departmental or organisational strategies, and having met demanding performance targets; experience of monitoring and evaluating delivery against business plans.
• Knowledge of financial investment programmes and charitable tax benefits is highly desirable although not essential.

• First class presentational, interpersonal and rapport skills and ability to secure the confidence and trust of existing and potential donors and funders quickly.
• Strong networker and partnership-builder: highly effective persuasive and influencing abilities, supported by outstanding written and verbal communications skills.
• Able to undertake or oversee detailed research and analysis relating to new fund development
• Able to work as part of a small team, under pressure when required, and within the foundations policy framework at all times
• Effective IT and administration skills. The post is largely self- servicing.

In return you will receive a salary circa £45K per annum.
