Previous experience in a lab environment is not required.

Experience for this role is desired but not essential as full training will be given.

An opportunity has arisen for a Laboratory Assistant, Microbiology Services within the R&D department of a multi-national medical devices company.

They are looking for a hard-working person with an eye for detail to help run and maintain the laboratory. Their scientists are a friendly group of individuals working together so a real team player is essential. The hours of work would be Mon-Fri 9:00am-4:30pm. Below are some of the tasks you would be involved with on a day to day basis:

- Working within a controlled laboratory quality system and in accordance with GLP/GMP compliant procedures
- Prepare and sterilise microbiological media and reagents in accordance with documented procedures, utilizing balances, hot plate stirrers, automated equipment and autoclaves; ensure accurate labelling and storage of media
- Routine QC testing of media in line with standard practices (e.g. growth promotion, pH)
- Preparation and maintenance of microbial stock cultures
- Ensure all information is documented accurately, that materials are handled correctly and that all necessary media batch records and quality control data are maintained
- Assist in the quality control monitoring program by completing daily/monthly checks on laboratory equipment, including the annual calibration and validation of equipment in accordance with calibration schedules
- Decontamination and disposal of laboratory waste
- Prepare, clean and maintain laboratory equipment, glassware and instruments used in testing
- Assist in microbiological testing by preparing samples and reagents
- Perform general housekeeping duties including taking receipt of deliveries, maintaining laboratory cleanliness, organizing inventory stocks, and ensuring adequate supplies of consumables are available to microbiology staff.

Skills & Competencies:

- Experience of working in a laboratory environment and within a Laboratory quality system would be advantageous
- The ability to multi-task, organize workload and work proactively on own initiative
- The ability to react and respond positively to changes in priority and workload
- The ability to be practically minded and possess a common sense approach to work
- The ability to follow detailed work instructions and adopt an organized and methodical approach to work
- The ability to produce and maintain clear records and documentation is essential and must have an a good attention to detail
- GCSE Math's and English; A Levels (or equivalent), preferably in science related subjects.
