Position: Radiation Protection Officer

Location: Stoke, Staffordshire

Salary: £38,000 to £43,000

The Radiation Protection Officer Role:

To help the activities at the Stoke and Salford facilities to continue in a safe and regulatory compliant manner. To develop and maintain site administrative arrangements for compliance with relevant statutory requirements including IRR99 and other applicable legislations. The Radiation Protection Officer is responsible for promoting a positive staff culture for improving site safety standards and ensuring that all in the facility are aware of their responsibilities as regards to Radiation and Health and Safety.

Key Responsibilities:

Set out the Radiation safety rules and regulation for both Stoke and Salford Facilities ensuring compliance with IRR99.

Serve as the point of contact for the designated facility RPA and with UK Health and Safety Executive (HSE)

Work with the RPA to develop and implement procedures, local rules, risk assessments and critical examinations.

Drive improvements in radiological protection and ensure worker doses are kept ALARP as appropriate

Manage the UK dosimetry program for both UK sites and field Service Engineers. Ensure all exposures to radiation in excess of site administrative limits are investigated and recorded

Perform or have performed prior risk assessment and critical examination as needed

Ensure all Radiation safety rules are being followed.

Train staff (users and ancillary personnel) on Radiation Safety to required levels. Provide refresher training at periodic intervals

Perform radiation surveys, isodose contour surveys, controlled area boundary surveys and other surveys as deemed necessary.

Introduce workable solutions to allow efficient commissioning and testing while ensuring employees remain protected.

Review site building designs for new installations and suggest levels of shielding to ensure correct protection is provided for workers and public.

Identify and advise on exclusion zones.

Provide calculations to justify the suggested shielding requirements.

Design radiation protection and shielding for CVI projects in partnership with CVI Engineering ,CVI sales , RSO and GTSS

Interact with CVI R & D group on design of next generation products and systems including occupied vehicle screening systems.

Provide technical and regulatory information for international tenders as requested

Provide international regulatory compliance and licensing guidance to management, sales, distributers , program/project managers and others upon request

Apply for licences for off-site testing.

Ensure all sites are adhering to all HSE regulations.

Ensure correct working practices are being followed.

Ensure correct PPE is available.

Make management aware of any Health and Safety failings.

Support customer visits when required.

Experience and Attributes:

Experience working within the X-ray – linear accelerator industry is preferred

The ability to work with others in a multi-disciplinary, fast-paced product development environment providing practical solutions

Experience of designing shielding applications would be an advantage

Degree in Radiation Physics or a similar field preferred
