Software Engineer in Test - Entry Level

This company is the UK's largest specialised digital agency in the automotive industry dedicated to ensuring their clients get the most from the internet. They build, manage and market online strategies for more than half of the UK's Top 200 motor retailers and many of the world's leading manufacturers.

Candidates for this role are able to work independently on test automation projects, under the overall direction of the Head of Devops. They exhibit excellent organisational and communication skills and demonstrate advanced computer literacy with a passion for developing quality web software and automated test suites.

Daily duties consist of: working with QA and Project Managers to build and develop automated functional tests for multiple products; understanding and following existing processes for manual testing of products and providing suitable solutions for functional regression testing across multiple browsers/environments; regular progress updates with the Head of Devops and test staff, both face-to-face and over the phone; assisting QA staff with basic Linux server administration tasks, code checkouts, running scripts, configuring Staging environments, etc.

There is an expectation that candidates can manage their workload with minimal supervision, can keep a work record and regularly meet goals for continual improvement. Where candidates can consistently demonstrate the required skills, scope will be given for career development and progression within the team. Training is supplied, where required, to ensure that team members possess the suitable knowledge and skills to fulfil their role.

Responsibilities:

- Ownership of multiple test automation projects for a wide-ranging product suite; setting goals and working to tight deadlines for the completion of milestones
- Running test suites and reporting problems and defects through the relevant channels in the business
- Manual testing duties, where required, to assist QA staff with urgent work
- Providing support to QA staff with Staging server administrative tasks, running scripts, checking out code and modifying application configuration files
- Liaising with Senior QA staff to develop workflow processes and templates to assist with the progression and upkeep of test suites
- Presenting to and training staff on test automation tools, best-practices and common pitfalls

Required Skills/Experience:

- PHP and Javascript programming experience in OOP context
- Experience of writing automated functional tests for multiple browser versions/environments using Selenium WebDriver with PHP/Javascript bindings
- Familiarity with LAMP stack and basic skills in Linux server administration via terminal
- Familiarity with versioning systems, ideally SVN/Git
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision

Desirable Skills/Experience:

- Commercial experience in a web/software development role, with exposure to TDD/BDD
- Familiarity with JIRA issue tracking system and any other related Atlassian products
- Knowledge of SVN / Git, or similar code versioning systems
- Knowledge of any of the following: MySQL / PHP / CSS / Javascript / JQuery
