About Coventry Building Society

We're owned by our members and are committed to putting you first in everything we do. Here you can learn more about your Society, what we stand for and our principles as the UK's third largest building society.

The Coventry is rich with history, from our foundation in 1884 to our merger with Stroud & Swindon Building Society in 2010. We have a fascinating story to tell which can be explored in detail.

We don't have sales targets or goals and we don't work to an over-elaborate mission statement. Ours is simple: putting members first in everything we do.

Our story

Founded in 1884, Thomas Mason Daffern and a small group of local citizens started the Coventry Permanent Economic Building Society with one clear objective - to protect the interests of its members.

In over 125 years our ethos hasn't changed. We pride ourselves on putting members first and believe this has been key to our success. By the beginning of the First World War the 'Economic', as it was then known, was the largest building society in the area. Following several mergers in the 70s and 80s, including one with Coventry Provident Building Society in 1983, we became known as Coventry Building Society.

After our merger with Stroud & Swindon Building Society in 2010 we have over 1.5 million members and employ over 1,800 staff, more than 75% of which are directly involved in servicing the needs of our members across our network. Currently the UK's third largest building society we look forward to protecting our members for many years to come.
